Preparation and Expectations

United in solving your pest issues

NOTE: bed bug treatments take time, there is no instant kill for bed bugs!

Before the treatment

What you need to do:

  • Wash all items in wardrobes and cupboards in hot water and eucalyptus oil.
  • Place in a hot dryer. If you cannot place in a hot dryer, FREEZE THE CLOTHES.
  • Place in plastic bags and wear your clothes in and out of the plastic bags for the next 6 weeks. Second treatments maybe be required but not before 4-6 weeks. This enables any live bed bugs and eggs that have hatched to come across the insecticide.
  • You are required to vacate the property for 4 hrs after the treatment has been conducted
  • If you are taking your clothing to a dry cleaner you should tell them that you have a bedbug issue at your property, so they can keep your clothing away from other customer’s clothes. Bedbugs can spread via clothing.

The Day of the treatment

What we will do :

Internally:

We can either treat the entire residence (excluding kitchen) or just rooms.

Treatment areas:
  • Bed
  • Mattress
  • Bed Slats & Frame
  • Draws
  • Power points
  • Behind pictures
  • Carpet and edges
  • Floor boards
  • Behind electrical equipment
  • Anywhere else deemed necessary.

After the Treatment:

Expectation

6 weeks – Follow up treatment may be required

What you may see:

  • Bed bugs will decrease over the next 6 weeks
  • 50% reduction in the first week.
  • You may still see and get bitten over the next few weeks, but that will decrease.

How are bed bugs treated?

We use a chemical application to all affected areas; this can be done to one room or the entire house, all depending on the rooms that are affected.  If more than one room is affected, we would recommend that you treat the entire house.

The areas treated will include:

  • Bed – slats, bed frame or ensemble
  • Mattress
  • Drawers
  • Power points
  • Behind pictures
  • Carpet and edges
  • Floor boards
  • Behind electrical equipment
  • Anywhere deemed necessary

How Does the Bed bug Treatment Work?

For the bedbugs to die they need to physically encounter the chemical.

Once they have come across the chemical it can take up to 10-12 hours for them to die.

This process aids in preventing other rooms being affected by bed bugs.

As bedbugs are nocturnal, it can take time for them to come across the chemical application.

Why are heat treatments for bedbugs not recommended?

For heat or steam to be effective against bedbugs the temperature needs to be between 65-75 degrees for a sustained period. Apart from the risk of fire, burns from the heat and steam areas such as cracks and crevices may not penetrate the heat, deeming the process inadequate.

Heat and steam can also damage furniture and has the potential of causing mould from the moisture left behind after steaming.

Do I need to Dispose my Furniture?

We are often asked about furniture and if a customer should throw their furniture away. We are pleased to inform you there is no need to throw away your furniture as it can be treated successfully.

Disposing bedbug infested furniture, you may create a risk of infestation for those around you.

How Should I prepare my house for bedbug control?

Apart from the clothing preparations previously mentioned

Internally
  • Clean up internally & externally
  • Wipe down counter-tops down
  • Wipe under appliances to remove food scraps
  • Wipe down any open jars of honey, syrups or sugars
  • Limit the clutter within the house
  • Limit paper goods and throw out cardboard boxes.

What to Expect After a Bedbug Pest Control Treatment

Bed bugs will decrease over the next 6 weeks.

You should notice a 50% reduction in the first week and this will continue to decrease over the next 6 weeks.

It is very normal to see and be bitten by bedbugs during this time, however if at the 6 week mark post treatment you are still seeing or being bitten by bedbugs then this is your indication that you will need the follow up treatment.

We have found that those who do conduct the preparations do get a better result than those who don’t.

Steps that you can take to Protect Your Home from bed bugs

  • Don’t take mattresses or padded furniture that has been left on the street
  • Inspect your bed sheets for blood spots, markings that look like rust or ink spots
  • Keep your suitcases covered in plastic and off the floor when you travel
  • When you travel, take a small flashlight to help you look for bed bugs.
  • When you return from a trip, wash all your clothes – even those that have not been worn – in hot water to ensure that any bed bugs that may have made it that far are not placed into your drawers/closet.

PNP Pest Control Recommends:

  • All deep cleaning including carpet cleaning should be completed before the pest control treatment
  • If you are moving into a new property it is best to have the pest control completed after the cleaning has been completed & before you move in.
  • Any painting should be completed before the pest control treatment
  • Repair any leaking plumbing or appliances as they will invite cockroaches to your property

How Long Is the Warranty?

PNP Pest Control does not offer warranty for bedbug treatments. Bedbug infestations do not occur naturally, they are physically introduced (carried in).
